Synchronized Fire-Setting

We set a fire on a
windswept beach
close to the time a
sun would set by
crumpling up the
day’s newspaper
and striking a
match.
Each flame itself
rebelled,
becoming
indifferent to the
task and we
sipped from the
flask we brought
to a continent’s
edge and jeered
at stars arriving
late.
