Not much of him was mine to love,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n but whatever was left, I took it gladly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The part of him that even his fierce god\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n could not consume, his sister\u2019s tongue\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n scald, his own rage blister. In my arms\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n he was allowed to be an ordinary man,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n uncertain, clumsy. Born an outsider,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n walls on either hand, grateful to belong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And so was I, startling myself with\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n soft singing in the tent, like a long\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n forgotten balm of rain. He smiled<\/span><\/p>\n in his red beard, a rusty quirk of mouth,<\/span><\/p>\n naming me desert lark, Sinai rosefinch,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n laughing dove. I sang only for him,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n sharing the morning\u2019s manna or a lull\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n in the simoom. Little more than that.<\/span><\/p>\n We flew together when we could,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n no stammered demands, no carving\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n in stone words good enough to bear\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n the weight of centuries. Listen, I said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n we are one. I give you all my heart,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n my soul, my strength.
