I know of a contagion\u2014
\nthe DNA of our blood flowing in the veins
\nof the seas and rivers. The shores
\noverseas welcome our visits since centuries.<\/p>\n
I cannot remember a face like my father’s
\non the ship of slavery, nor his native name,
\nbut his chains of heritage are long enough
\nto reach my children’s children.<\/p>\n
The plague of a branch spreads across,
\nso why would we not protest? Our tree
\nof lineage would be cut off if we stay silent.<\/p>\n
History has managed to knock on our doors
\nwith his bruised knuckles\u2014 these doors
\nare built for millenniums, and we have learnt
\nhow best to open them, and to whom,
\nfrom which place, for which cause.<\/p>\n
We see what vile lurks out of our windows
\non our distant relatives, and we cry out
\nfor our lives in another’s flesh.
